Parting Shot: Did Donald Trump Just Super-Size This Election with His McDonald’s Stunt?

In the span of a week, former President Donald Trump went from working the drive through at McDonald’s to allegedly praising Adolf Hitler’s generals while president. Can you tell we’re just mere weeks away from election day? It feels like everybody is looking for an October surprise, yet with every new piece of breaking news, voters keep saying–to borrow a phrase from another popular fast-food chain–”Where’s the beef?”

Newsweek‘s Jason Lemon joins me on the latest episode of the Parting Shot podcast to break down the week’s biggest stories. Watch our full chat or listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get podcasts.

The stories covered this week include…

Trump’s McDonald’s stunt was all anybody could talk about earlier this week. While the images from the stunt were incredible, what impact will it have on the election? And how does Trump, someone born into immense wealth, relate so well to working class Americans?

Then, later on in the week, John Kelly, Trump’s White House chief of staff from 2017 to 2019, said in an interview with the New York Times on Tuesday, “He commented more than once that, ‘You know, Hitler did some good things, too.'” In a statement to Newsweek, Alex Pfeiffer, Trump’s campaign adviser, said: “This is absolutely false. President Trump never said this.”

For most candidates, news like this would be the end of their political career, but not for Trump. What makes him a different sort of candidate and does the reaction to this news indicate a change in the Republican Party?

Finally, we discussed former President Barack Obama and rapper Eminem stumping for Vice President Kamala Harris on the campaign trail recently. It does seem like the Harris campaign is putting a focus on getting some of the male votes that, according to polling, are going to Trump. Will it be enough? We’ll see in less than two weeks.

Earlier this week on the Parting Shot podcast, I chatted with George Lopez about working with his daughter, Mayan, on the NBC sitcom Lopez vs. Lopez and what it feels like to have the impact Lopez has had on TV for Latin Americans. Also, Bridget Everett stopped by the podcast to talk about the third season of her HBO series Somebody Somewhere.
