The Democrats Have No Place for Black Men With Traditional Values | Opinion

The public insults directed at the Black men not voting for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election are a helpful reminder that the only men Democrats tolerate are obedient allies. The party’s views on social progress are shaped in large part by feminists and Pride activists, which means men who want to have any influence on the political Left must be willing to use their “power” and “privilege” on behalf of women or people in the LGBTQ coalition.

This explains why some of the most vocal critics of Black men this election cycle have been surrogates who look like us. In the last month we have seen President Barack Obama chastise “the brothers” during a campaign stop in Pittsburgh. Spike Lee approved of Obama’s tough love approach and said some Black men have been “drinking that Kool-Aid” and needed to “get their minds right” in time for the election. Jamal Bryant, the pastor of the church Vice President Harris recently addressed, said “something is wrong with brothers who don’t know how to support a sister.”

The message from Democrats to Black men who hold to traditional views is simple: Convert to our worldview or expect to be treated like a sexist bigot.

But as progressives continue to move Left on social issues, they are understandably alienating an increasing number of Black men with traditional values and views on gender and sexuality. Some are conservative Christians who still believe marriage is defined as a lifelong union between one man and one woman. Others may be more moderate when it comes to how people live their personal lives, but don’t want LGBT content pushed on their children, whether in the media or in school.

The Left’s scolding tone will not win them over. Neither will the constant accusations of misogyny. Just because a Black man won’t wear Roland Martin’s “Vote Like a Black Woman” shirt does not make him a sexist. Likewise, a Black pastor who is staunchly pro-life is not “anti-woman” just because Democrats can point to NBA superstar Stephen Curry, a self-professed Christian and Harris surrogate, as a public supporter of abortion.

This is the Democrats’ way: The party only has room in it for Black men who are willing to subordinate their traditional values to the feminist and queer values of the Left. Every high profile Black man stumping for the Democrats who still has traditional values is going to have to grapple—publicly or privately—with the tension between his views and his role as an ally to higher priority social justice causes.

Consider Charlamagne Tha God, co-host of the popular radio show The Breakfast Club, whorecently acknowledged the effectiveness of a Trump campaign ad showing Kamala Harris stating her support for “taxpayer-funded sex changes for prisoners.” So effusive were his comments that the radio personality, himself a Harris supporter, had to issue a cease and desist order against the Trump campaign after they used his comments in a subsequent ad.

Charlamagne is an outspoken social commentator, but he knows his role in the progressive political ecosystem. The same can be said for other prominent Black male Democrats. This explains why New York City mayor Eric Adams promoted drag queens in the classroom. It’s also the reason Maryland governor Wes Moore—a married father of two—is far more vocal about “trans visibility” than the importance of the nuclear family.

Democrats who see LGBTQ activism as a natural continuation of the civil rights movement support men like Raphael Warnock because he helps them make “trans” the new “Black.” Senator Raphael Warnock represents Georgia in the nation’s capital and pastors Dr. King’s old congregation, Ebenezer Baptist Church, in Atlanta. Senator Warnock draws on the legacy and moral authority of the Civil Rights movement, but he does not hold to any Biblical positions that would upset his party. Like many of his peers in the pulpit, he celebrates the Black pastors in previous generations who fought against the color line, even as he seems hellbent on destroying the sex binary.

What the party will not tolerate are men like Hall of Fame NFL coach Tony Dungy. Dungy displays his Christian values in the work he does to promote faith, family, and fatherhood. He is publicly vilified by progressives for his pro-life views and slammed as a bigot for believing in traditional marriage. This is the treatment every Black man who is not an obedient ally should expect to receive. The only question is how they will respond. White men with traditional values are quite comfortable voting for, and being associated with, the Republican Party. Unfortunately, progressive gatekeepers make life difficult for Black men who make the same choice.

When you believe you own a certain constituency and they owe you their vote, even the slightest signs of defection are enough to bring out your ugly side. Democrats could do some self-reflection and listen to Black men, but in the game of intersectional politics where abortion and gender identity are top priorities, concern for the “privileged” would be seen by their key constituencies as betrayal of the marginalized.

That means Black men should prepare for more attacks from the party beholden to the matriarchy both now and in the future.
