Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Calais Campbell said he was also detained by police on Sunday morning, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.

Calais Campbell says he was also detained by police while trying to deescalate the situation between police and Tyreek Hill. He saw Hill in handcuffs and believed it was “excessive force.” Police put Campbell in handcuffs as well. He was cited for disobeying a direct order.

Campbell attempted to de-escalate the situation with teammate Tyreek Hill and the Miami-Dade police officers.

Campbell witnessed Hill in handcuffs which he labeled as “excessive force”. Officers then proceeded to put Campbell in handcuffs as a result of disobeying a direct order.

As a result of the incidents, the Miami-Dade Police Department placed an undisclosed officer on leave.

“Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter,” said Director Stephanie V. Daniels of the Miami-Dade Police Department. “One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted. I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers.”

Both Hill and Campbell played in the Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The star receiver scored an 80-yard touchdown to help Miami clinch a 20-17 win on Sunday. His celebration following the score included his teammate Jaylen Waddle pretending to handcuff him.

Campbell also had a noteworthy play in Sunday’s season opener. The defensive tackle engulfed Trevor Lawrence for a 13-yard sack.

“For him to put handcuffs on me, I felt some type of way,” Campbell told NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe. “But that just goes to show how resilient we are. We didn’t let that stop us.”

Social media exploded with footage of the Dolphins star receiver being handcuffed a block from Hard Rock Stadium just hours before Miami opened the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hill was spotted face down on the ground as officers put his hands behind his back.

Drew Rosenhaus, Hill’s agent, spoke to Mike Cugno of CBS regarding the incident ahead of the Week 1 matchup.

“Still looking for answers,” Rosenhaus said. “Tyreek was detained. The police inexplicably put him in handcuffs relative to a moving traffic violation entering the stadium of all things on game day. A surreal situation. I’m extremely upset about it. Thank God Tyreek’s OK. We’ll be investigating the police conduct afterwards, not making any allegations right now. We’ll leave that to Tyreek’s legal team. It was a very traumatic situation. We pulled it together. He is going to play today.”

Despite their brief detainments by the police, Hill and Campbell still helped the Dolphins get in the win column to start the year.
