In a video that has amused social media users, one dog owner finally cracked the code on how her mischievous border collies were sneaking out of her garden.
The clip, posted on Instagram by user @logan.and.leia, showed the two crafty pups, Logan and Leia, unwittingly revealing their secret escape route after being “tricked” by their owner.
Text overlaid on the video said, “When you trick your pup into showing you how she escapes from the garden.” The footage starts with the owner calling the dogs while standing on the other side of a fence. Leia then demonstrates how she’s been escaping the yard: by pushing open a side gate and squeezing through the narrow gap.
“Puppies have been escaping and we have finally figured out how,” the owner wrote in the video’s caption, adding that Leia was a “cheeky girl.” Newsweek has contacted @logan.and.leia via Instagram for comment.
While the dogs’ escape tactics left viewers in stitches, the video highlights an issue many pet owners face. When it comes to keeping dogs secure in a yard, experts recommend fences that are at least 6 feet high for most dogs—though certain breeds, such as Great Danes or Dobermans, may need even taller barriers.
It’s also essential to consider dogs’ digging skills. Burying fencing at least 12 to 24 inches underground can help prevent tunneling escapes.

As the Instagram video showed, securing the yard might not always be enough, especially when dealing with clever breeds, such as border collies. Frequent checks and supervision are key to ensuring the safety of pets at home.
In the comments section of the video, which has received more than 6,000 likes, viewers expressed their delight at the owner’s trap and the dogs’ antics.
“Your fault for getting a Border Collie, they could escape Alcatraz if they wanted,” a user wrote.
Another shared their experience with an escape-artist pup: “Very smart move! I did this with my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Sneaky little minx! [She] would flatten herself and crawl completely flat under the gate that nearly touched the ground. Never seen anything like it.”
“Did that with my cats,” one commenter said. “Now their escape paths are secured and my a** isn’t hopping fences anymore.”
