A woman online has undergone a controversial hair transformation, leading to a hilarious reaction from her boyfriend.
A video posted to TikTok by Erica Giles has gone viral after she revealed her new bangs to her boyfriend Brandon—who had explicitly told her he hated bangs. His reaction to the new hairstyle was predictably stunned. Giles, 26, spoke to Newsweek about why she went for the cut knowing her boyfriend wouldn’t like it, and how this independence reflects how they operate as a couple.
“My boyfriend hates bangs,” Giles said in the video. “So, what did I do? I went and got bangs, just to prove a point.” Right before she left for the hair appointment, Giles said Brandon had told her not to get bangs, “please.”

Giles told Newsweek that she opted for the cut because she wanted something that would flatter her features and face shape, and “add a little dimension.” It’s not the first time she had bangs, but it’s the first time her boyfriend had seen her with them.
“He’s never been a fan of bangs,” Giles said. “I wasn’t sure how he’d react, and I honestly didn’t really care. I knew he’d love me either way even if he truly did not like them. Plus it’s hair, it grows back!”
In the video, Brandon put his hands to his mouth after seeing Giles with the new hairstyle.
“The bangs are banging,” he said. “Wow, it’s different.”
While his statement might occur to some as a code for complete disapproval, Giles said that within the context of their “brutally honest” relationship, it was a pretty positive reaction. “I was genuinely surprised because that meant he didn’t hate them,” she said.
Giles isn’t the only one who pushes past the other’s preferences in the relationship, either—she said that Brandon also shaves his beard every day, although she has told him explicitly that she prefers him with a beard.
“I feel really lucky to be in a relationship where we can openly share our opinions without worrying about offending one another,” she said. “It’s all just personal preference and doing what makes you feel most confident in your own skin!”
As for the bangs, Giles’ viewers will be glad to know Brandon has warmed up to them. Now that they’ve grown out a bit, though, Giles has a decision to make.
“I will probably cut them again,” she said.
